Natural Skin Care

The skin is one of the body's largest organs and greatest defense barriers. Health skin is mostly related to a healthy diet, rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins, and essential fats, as well as a well-functioning liver and digestive system. You absorb the products that you apply to your skin directly into your body. So the best rule is: don’t apply anything to the skin that you wouldn’t eat!

Cleansing
Soaps are dehydrating, and with frequent washing, oils are depleted from the skin. Avoid harsh, astringent soaps and only wash hands, feet, underarms, groin, and face; the rest of the body can be rinsed or washed with a washcloth free of soap. Olive oil and/or coconut oilbased soaps are best, as they add moisture to the skin.

Avoid dry cracked skin. A decrease in your natural defense/immune barrier increases risk of exposure to pathogens and increases your risk for getting sick.

Moisturizing
The idea of a moisturizer is to lock in water in the skin.
High quality omega 3 and 6 oils in the diet are very important to the moisture of the skin. The most important hydrator of course is water! Drink half your body weight in ounces each day!

Apply coconut oil after bathing for maximum moisturizing and to maximize its antimicrobial properties. Use pure Emu oil around the eyes (an oil derived from the fat of Emu birds has a pH balance very close to that of the human skin).

Beauty Products
A lot of ingredients in beauty products can be irritating to the skin as they are synthetic and toxic often derived from petroleum causing acne, eczema, redness, allergic reactions, and cancer.

There are several lines of natural, organic skin care, hair care, and cosmetics available in health food and specialty stores. Look for ingredients you recognize, can pronounce, and are free of the chemicals listed below.
